Kollam is globally recognized as the “Cashew Capital of the World“, with over 600 traditional cashew processing units operating in the city. Kollam’s economy revolved around cashew, with hundreds of small and large factories.  

Around 800,000 tonnes of raw cashews are imported annually into Kollam and roughly 130,000 tonnes of cashew kernels are processed and exported each year

The industry is heavily labor-intensive and dominated by women, who perform delicate tasks like shelling, peeling, and grading. These artisans often rely solely on precision tools like wooden mallets and their own skills—no mechanization were adopted for decades —leading to injuries like burn marks from the caustic cashew shells.
