The Fall of the Cashew Capital — How Kollam’s Cashew Industry Declined

Once the World’s Cashew Hub Once the World's Cashew Hub - Kollam, a port city in Kerala, was long known as the “Cashew Capital of the World” due to its large-scale cashew processing and export operations. For decades, cashews were among India’s significant agricultural exports, and Kollam’s factories determined global pricing and supplied kernels across markets.

Causes Behind the Collapse of Cashew Factories in Kollam

 – Sharp increase in raw cashew nut prices.
 – Increase in import duty on raw cashew nuts (from 2016 onwards).
 – Severe global competition, especially from Vietnam
 – High labour costs in Kerala & Low level of mechanisation.
 – Scarcity of domestic raw cashew production
 – Banking and credit stress along with Working-capital shortages
 – Accounts turning into NPAs leading to SARFAESI actions and attachment of factory properties
 – Delayed or inadequate policy support
 – Fluctuating international demand and price pressure
 – Poor diversification and branding
 – COVID-19 impact (temporary but severe)
 – Inter-state competition within India.

How to overcome the collapse and revive the sector.

 – Ensure stable and affordable raw cashew nut supply through domestic cultivation.
•Introduce gradual mechanisation to improve productivity.
•Provide one-time loan restructuring, interest relief, and working-capital support.
•Avoid import duty on raw cashew nuts.
•Shift the industry focus from bulk kernel exports to branded, value-added cashew products.

•Establish common processing, mechanisation to support small and medium factories.
•Encourage diversification into cashew by-products such as CNSL, cashew butter, confectionery, and health foods.

•Ensure consistent government policy and timely intervention to restore confidence
